The stock market started the year by posting a strong gain. The market, as measured by the S&P 500 index, closed 5.62% higher in January. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) gained 5.64% for the month. As for my pension plan assets, I made money in January. Consequently, my first investment goal, preservation of capital, was achieved.
