Company Overview and News
We all know that tech giant Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL, NASDAQ:GOOG), Google’s parent company, is primarily an advertising company. The firm’s bread and butter comes from selling ad space, making its search engine pretty much the most valuable part of the business and the main catalyst for GOOGL stock. That’s understandably worrying for investors, not only because it essentially puts the majority of the firm’s eggs in one basket, but also because privacy concerns and new legislation are threatening to turn the online advertising space upside down over the next decade.

It hasn’t been easy for General Motors (NYSE:GM), Fiat Chrysler (NYSE:FCAU) Daimler (OTCMKTS:DDAIF) or even Ferrari (NYSE:RACE). But most of all, it’s been a tough road for Ford Motor (NYSE:F). F stock is down a whopping 24% so far this year and more than 20% since early June.

We all know that online ads and marketing run the show at Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL). Google’s data and analytics programs provide plenty of cash as advertisers continue to spend more and more on online and mobile channels. On Aug 8, China retaliated with 25% tariffs on $16 billion worth of U.S. goods that include cars and motorcycles. Automakers are already feeling the heat of tariffs and the recent announcement is only going to make things difficult. Also, China’s automobile sales declined 4% in July, with U.S. carmakers losing considerable market share.

Tariffs on cars and car parts could raise the price of the Ford F-150 by as much as $5,000. The increase would be a huge blow to the already beleaguered Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F). Several other car companies could have similar problems.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) sold 70,949 F-Series pickups in July, topping sales of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE: FCAU) Ram pickups of 40.276 units. For the year to date, Ford has sold 522,087 F-Series pickups to Ram’s total of 273,815. General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) no longer reports monthly sales results.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE: FCAU) reported Wednesday that July sales increased by 6% year over year to 170,970 vehicles, compared with July 2017 sales of 161,477. The Jeep brand posted a sales increase of 15% year-over-year as sales of the new Wrangler rose 14% to more than 21,000 units, and Cherokee sales soared 71% to 20,210 units.
