Company Overview and News
The endless wave of changes in retail just never seems to end. In the 1990s it was Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) that killed thousands of retailers. Now it is Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) which can go after any segment of retail that it wants. Many investors have believed that the dollar store theme was largely immune to Walmart and to Amazon, and that may still at least have some partial truth—but sometimes a simple email can change everything.

There about 60 dollar stores in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas, evenly divided among Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar General brands. I’ve been in a few of them and, frankly, they all look the same to me. I suspect if I were to visit other stores in my town not to mention the 30,000 more located elsewhere in the US and Canada, I’d see the same-- 6,000-8,000 square foot buildings stocked with mostly consumables and seasonal items from a buck to upwards of ten bucks.

As value investors, we are always on the lookout for bargains - stocks or bonds that are trading at prices below our estimate of Fair Market Value (FMV). Both research and common sense dictate that the greater the discrepancy between price and FMV, the better it provides a higher possible margin of safety and implied upside. However, securities are often detached from their FMVs because the business is suffering, leaving investors to figure out whether the issues at hand will be minor and temporary or debilitating and permanent.

On average, September has become the stock market’s worst month. While such a panic has not occurred so far this year, the recent rise in the S&P 500 Volatility Index (INDEXCBOE:VIX) has aroused concern among some investors. Because of historical patterns, many investors leave the stock market entirely for fear of a September slump.

Every week, Canada’s national newspaper, the Globe and Mail, publishes a list of stars and dogs in the stock markets. The general thinking being the stars are the stocks to buy while the dogs, such as GameStop (NYSE:GME) — the video game retailer that has lost a significant portion of its market cap over the past five years as gamers have gone online — are to be avoided.
