Are we financially ready to retire?

My wife (51) and I (54) own quality shares and listed investment companies (LICs) worth $1.36 million, cash of $350,000 and a joint self-managed super fund of $1.55 million, also comprising shares, LICs and cash. We also own our regional Victoria home worth $450,000 outright. My wife doesn’t work and I intend to retire in August 2018 when I turn 55. My preservation age is 59 and my wife’s is 60. In the period before we can obtain access to super, we expect to generate a minimum of $85,000 a year net from dividends and interest, which is sufficient for our needs, fully utilising two tax-free thresholds.

Solar continues to be the most cost-effective way of generating electricity, so there is no doubt in my mind that our industry will continue to thrive. Perhaps not as fast as the past decade, but we will generate rapid growth nonetheless. Because over the next four-plus years, economics will matter more than ever with a Republican administration.
